That was a lot of snow at
Mt. Shasta! Very heavy snow dropped the temperature to 30F this morning, and it
is still only 31F but it should warm up soon as the snow lightens and becomes
more intermittent. 1.62” of liquid-equivalent precipitation so far. Winds are
lighter than expected, with a maximum of perhaps only 6-8 kt. After a break
this evening, intermittent moderate to heavy snow showers will occur tonight, albeit
not as steady and long-lasting as last night’s round. The snow will push
temperatures back down to freezing. As the snow stops tomorrow and some sun
appears, it will warm up again, but with daytime heating limited by the cold air
aloft and deep snow cover on the ground causing the sun’s energy to be
reflected away or used to melt the snow instead of raising the air temperature.
With the storm and associated pressure gradient weakening through tomorrow, winds
will likely be even weaker tomorrow than today. Clear skies with light winds and
fresh snow cover tomorrow night will lead to decent radiational cooling,
leading to a low at the end (Thursday 06z).
