Day 6 of Rapid City, SD (KRAP)

With mostly clear skies and light winds, it dropped to 41F last night at KRAP, with great spatial variation in the area. The band of mid-level clouds came in and went out this afternoon in 2 hours, with little effect on the high temperature. 78F now with downsloping and sunshine! Surface winds have shifted to northerly, but the big burst of wind has yet to come this evening. Winds will remain fairly strong overnight and re-strengthen in the early morning, perhaps even stronger than the burst of wind this evening (probably >30 kt maximum), with USL having a better handle on it due to the broader and longer-duration nature. The strong winds will prevent good radiational cooling and a surface inversion from forming despite the mostly clear skies, and temperatures should be close to model guidance as opposed to way below. However, the low will likely be at the end (Thursday 06z), when winds are much lighter, allowing for much better radiational cooling and it getting cooler than model guidance again. It will be mostly sunny tomorrow with weak cold advection, so it will just follow the standard diurnal cycle with a slower warmup, with highs probably slightly above models as usual for a sunny day.
