Day 1 of Rapid City will be very
similar to the day before, with cloudless skies and relatively light winds.
Winds will be slightly more southeasterly or just calm tonight compared to the
past couple of nights, which should minimize any downsloping effect off the
Black Hills and allow for rapid radiational cooling, likely getting cooler than
the past two nights and colder than models (perhaps except USL and MOS-X), due
to the steep surface nocturnal inversion that models have a hard time capturing.
Full sunshine tomorrow will quickly warm it up to similar temperatures to this
afternoon. Some southeasterly wind will develop but it looks relatively weak. USL
actually looks pretty good as it is, which is not surprising for a quiet
weather day.
Note that in hilly or mountainous
areas, there is a terrain-induced wind diurnal cycle: upslope in the afternoon
and evening (in this case, easterly), and downslope (in this case, westerly) late
at night and early morning. The superposition
with the background light southeasterly synoptic-scale flow leads to little or
no wind tonight but some southeasterly wind during the day tomorrow.
