A band of light to
moderate rain associated with a weak low-pressure system unexpectedly passed
just to the north of KSDF, meaning that KSDF only had 0.01" of rain and therefore
also missed most of the evaporational cooling and burst of wind, with it only dropping
to 47F last night. A mix of sun and clouds led to a warmup to 57F, cooler than
the NWS and in the middle of the wide range of model temperatures. The warmup
was tempered by cold advection with stronger than expected northerly winds,
with a maximum of 14 kt, independent of last night’s rain.
Clear skies and
light winds will initially lead to good radiational cooling tonight, and the
day 5 low will likely be achieved at or just before 06z tonight. Mid-level clouds
will increase after 09z, stopping the radiational cooling, but no rain is
expected. Broad weak surface high pressure dominates tomorrow, leading to mostly
sunny skies after a cloudy early morning and temperatures rising above model
guidance. The sunshine-induced low-level instability will also promote whatever
relatively weak westerly or northwesterly winds exist aloft down to the surface.
There could also be isolated afternoon showers with the daytime instability and
some mid-level moisture, but most places will not see any rain.
