Day 3 of Medford, OR (KMFR)

Once again, clouds prevented much radiational cooling last night, with a low of 44F, though it could get cooler than that before 06z tonight with clearer skies and a slightly cooler and noticeably drier air mass. No measurable rain occurred. Clouds cleared out this afternoon with a high of 57F, warmer than just all models, and the northwesterly wind peaked at 9-10 kt this morning, but could still get a little stronger this evening as the sea breeze really sets in. Partly cloudy skies, lightening winds, and a drier air mass should finally lead to better radiational cooling tonight, with temperatures likely going below most model guidance but probably not by that much given some increasing clouds again after 06z tonight. Actually, a short period of cold rain (even mixed with snow?) is possible tomorrow morning with piece of energy rotating around main disturbance to the southeast, which would also cool it down temporarily via evaporational and sublimational cooling rather than radiational cooling. Skies will clear again tomorrow, with mostly sunny skies by the afternoon leading to a quick warmup until the boundary layer is mixed and deepened (dry adiabatic lapse rate), likely to above model guidance again, with a similar high to today. Even with any nocturnal inversion tomorrow morning, the March sun angle and cold air aloft should lead to ample vertical mixing. With the surface low-pressure to the southeast, synoptic-scale northwesterly winds will occur and be enhanced by sunshine mixing down winds from aloft down to the surface, similar to today, but likely stronger than today. Mostly clear skies tomorrow night will lead to another chance at the low if it doesn’t cool down as much as expected tonight for whatever reason, though there may be enough lingering northwesterly wind to prevent ideal radiational cooling then.
