Day 2 of Crescent City, CA (KCEC)

Heavy rain last night into during the day today amounted to 1.69” so far. Southwesterly winds, reaching a maximum of 22 kt, surprisingly not as strong as earlier in the evening, led to a high of 51F before winds weakened and turned to northwesterly with a cooldown to 49F, but then surprisingly, winds turned to southeasterly and it warmed to 51F. Skies will clear slightly tonight, but probably not enough for much radiational cooling tonight. Sunshine will lead to a modest warmup tomorrow, greatly muted by strengthening onshore northwesterly winds. The winds will be enhanced by the diurnal cycle as inland areas warm up much more than the ocean, promoting an onshore sea breeze. However, the winds might not arrive until noon or just after, and temperatures could quickly spike above what models show before that due to downslope and slightly offshore northeasterly winds just aloft, making for a tricky high temperature forecast. Even just how strong the winds get is a bit uncertain, with the northeasterly downslope winds just aloft possibly colliding with and muting the strong onshore flow right along the coast. Winds will lighten somewhat tomorrow night (though not enough for ideal radiational cooling), and skies will remain clear, so somewhat better radiational cooling will occur tomorrow night, with the low likely occurring at the end (Thursday 06z).
