Day 9 of 2021-22 Individual Tournament City: Wichita Falls, TX (KSPS)

Day 8 recap:

As expected, the front did not arrive until after the start of day 8, with a high of 73F due to SW wind right ahead of the cold front. There was a maximum wind of 26 kt with the burst of northerly winds right behind the cold front. However, despite how cold the air mass was to the north, it seems to have modified greatly as it moved into Texas, perhaps due to the clear skies and strong April sun the day before. Still, daytime temperatures were in the 50s and 60s, much cooler than the previous day but not as cool as the NAM 3-km and HRRR due to low clouds being a little thinner than those models suggested. It also cooled down to 52F by the late 06z, but cooling was limited by low clouds (which cleared for a time just after 06z).

Day 9:

Today and tomorrow constitute the Round of 16. Some radiational cooling is expected tonight with light easterly winds and some high cirrus clouds. There is a slight chance of low clouds developing as the low-levels approach saturation with the nighttime cooling, but if it occurs, it will be late enough to not really affect the low.

During the day tomorrow, it will be mostly cloudy (mostly mid-upper level clouds) and warm with higher humidity due to increasing south-southeasterly wind transporting moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. Despite the higher humidity, there is only a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm due to lack of synoptic-scale lifting or triggers for convection. There will also still be breaks of sun to promote some daytime heating. This will lead to a tricky high dependent on just how many breaks in the clouds there are, and if a thunderstorm happens to nail the station, everyone's precip will be off except for the few who dare to put non-zero precip.
