Day 3 of 2021-22 Individual Tournament City: Wichita Falls, TX (KSPS)

Day 2 recap:

The front did not disappoint, with a 42 kt wind at the end of day 1 and 43 kt at the beginning of day 2, the 4th and 3rd highest winds respectively in WxChallenge history. Even without the help of vertical mixing from daytime heating, the westerly winds ahead of the front kept the lower-levels well-mixed even as the night progressed and prevented an inversion that could have tempered the strong winds.

As expected, temperatures rose slowly with the April sun battling cold advection, with it reaching 71F. More surprisingly, clouds moved in at the end of day 2 and it only cooled down to 51F.

Day 3

Rather quiet weather is expected but low temperature is still tricky. Winds will lighten later tonight but won't calm completely and could be near the threshold for good radiational cooling. That said, they will be weaker than last night and with no clouds, more cooling is still expected. Bright sunshine tomorrow will lead to quickly rising temperatures and a well-mixed lower atmosphere, with a straightforward high similar or slightly warmer than today. The vertical mixing will still lead to rather strong winds but weaker yesterday due to a weaker pressure gradient. There is also a second chance of a low at the end (Saturday 06z) when winds will really calm, leading to the best radiational cooling conditions so far.
