Well, somehow it dropped to
54F last night with very light wind. Amazing given how warm other parts of the
Southeast U.S. are. Eventually, the southerly winds broke through and it warmed
to 74F with a maximum wind of 16 kt so far. Saving the excitement for last! Sharp
cold front enters just after 06z tonight with a brief period of heavy rain and
possibly thunderstorms expected. These storms will likely produce a burst of
strong winds too, though probably not severe winds due to the loss of daytime
heating by then leading to more resistance to mixing the strong winds from
aloft. Still, it will be very warm at the beginning (06z tonight), and the day
8 high will occur at that time. It usually gets warmer than modeled with such a
warm surge right ahead of a cold front like this, especially since there looks
to be minimal rain before 06z. Either way, temperatures will fall sharply after
the cold front and winds will shift to the northwest. Rather strong
northwesterly winds will continue through the day, leading to falling or steady
temperatures throughout the day even with some afternoon clearing. The wind
will decrease slightly overnight Friday night with the loss of solar heating
induced vertical mixing, limiting radiational cooling by itself even with clear
skies, but the cold advection will rather uniformly continue to cool it down to
a low at the end (Saturday 06z).
