Despite mostly clear skies
early on, it seems like the lingering southeasterly wind and urban heat island
limited cooling, and it only dropped to 54F. It was cloudy for the whole day so
far (including a brief shower of 0.01”) and surprisingly, the high is only 64-65F
so far, despite the warm air being so close nearby. It seems like the clouds
are a bit more persistent than expected and the warm front is struggling to
push north of Atlanta as the southerly winds
weakened. Today’s forecast is the
most challenging so far in Atlanta. Only slow cooling is expected tonight as
southerly winds re-strengthen slightly with partly cloudy skies initially with
increasing clouds late and high humidity. A few breaks of sun will lead to very
warm temperatures tomorrow with a stiff southerly wind. The trickiest part is
the end of the period at around Friday 06z. A cold front with showers and
thunderstorms will be crossing Atlanta right around that time, and whether it
is a little faster or slower will determine whether the bulk of the rain falls
for day 7 or day 8. Fronts crossing at the thresholds of days are always the
trickiest! The storm responsible for the cold front is weaker than originally
expected, so the cold front will likely move a little slower and not pass until
after Friday 06z. There will likely still be some rain ahead of it for day 7,
but the heaviest rain and large temperature drop look to hold off until just after
that time.
