Already some trickiness for
day 1 of Augusta, ME (KAUG). After a very mild day today, a cold front will pass this evening with an
Alberta clipper passing way to the north, but likely with no measurable
precipitation due to the lack of moisture and dynamics and downsloping.
However, temperatures will fall quickly late in the night with northwesterly
winds inducing cold advection, though the downsloping will limit how cold it
gets. The maximum wind could actually occur near the beginning (midnight local
time or 05 UTC). Partial clearing will occur tonight as well, though the wind
will prevent good radiational cooling early on. The wind will calm down at the
last minute right before sunrise, but lingering mid-level clouds could still
limit radiational cooling. The cold advection will not last long as winds to turn to weak southeasterly
or easterly due to another clipper approaching from the west, causing it to
warm up somewhat again with mostly sunny skies at least in the morning before
mid-level clouds increase in the afternoon. However, a slight upslope component
and possible subtle cold air damming will prevent it from getting particularly warm.
This clipper will track farther south, though still to the north of Augusta,
and have more mid-level energy and dynamics. leading to a brief period of snow
showers or squalls Tuesday evening, though they will probably be weakening as
they move in.
