Good radiational cooling occurred last night with the
temperature crashing through the dew point down to 22F, forming freezing fog.
The clouds were shallower than yesterday morning, but still took until noon local
time to burn off, and it rapidly warmed up to 50F since then, with afternoon
sunshine and rather warm air just aloft. It will probably top out at 51-52F.
Winds have been very weak so far, only 6 kt maximum, perhaps due to it taking
longer than expected to clear out and warm up.
Tonight and tomorrow will be very similar to last night and
today, with calm winds and clear skies leading to rapid radiational cooling
followed by some freezing fog (especially with a current dew point of 40F
allowing for plenty of condensation), and then clearing by noon leading to a
rapid warm up tomorrow afternoon. With the air aloft being so warm, quite the
nocturnal inversion will form! Expect relatively poor vertical mixing and weak winds especially
if fog takes its time burning off again. Models are showing fog actually being a bit persistent tomorrow,
leading to at least slightly lower high temperatures, but by how much is
hard to say.
