An incredibly boring week weather-wise in Olympia, WA. Well,
sort of – one caveat that we are already seeing today is the formation and
thickening of fog and low clouds late in the night due to strong radiational
cooling, long nights, and abundant low-level moisture. During the day, the sun’s
heating gradually “burns” these clouds off, but with the low sun angle in
mid-November, it has taken until noon local time to truly clear out, though it
still rose to 51F. However, now that is clear, rapid radiational cooling will
occur tonight, given clear skies and calm winds again, crashing through the dew
point until the formation of fog and low clouds. Slightly lower relative
humidity will probably lead to the clouds being somewhat thinner tonight and
tomorrow morning, so the clouds will probably clear out a little earlier tomorrow,
allowing a little more time to fully mix and warm up the lower atmosphere. HRRR
and ECMWF are probably underdoing, while the NAM 3-km is probably overdoing the
low-level cloud formation, as usual. Light channeled north-northeasterly winds
from Puget Sound are expected, like the past few days.
