Day 4 of Olympia, WA (KOLM)

Last night, evening clouds broke up temporarily and it rapidly dropped to 28F before a solid stratus deck moved in for the rest of the night, keeping the temperature constant at 32F. The clouds are more widespread than expected and are slow to break up, though it still warmed up to 46F. Some high clouds are also moving in as expected.

Low tonight is uncertain, with increasing mid-high level clouds due to a weak disturbance approaching from the southwest. These clouds by themselves wouldn’t prevent modest radiational cooling, but there’s uncertainty into how long the lower stratus deck will persist. It will likely break for some time tonight, allowing for some cooling but not as much as the past 2 days due to increasing mid-upper level clouds. Some breaks in the clouds are possible tomorrow but it will not fully clear out, limiting warming. Despite geostrophic winds shifting to southeasterly or southerly ahead of the disturbance, surface winds will actually still be out of the north-northeast due to weak Puget Sound channeling. The weak disturbance could also bring a few showers dropping up to a few hundredths of an inch. For now, NWS has a 50% probability of measurable rain.
