Well, I guess I just don’t
understand how nighttime cooling works in Knoxville. It only dropped to 33F
last night. Clouds did persist longer than expected, but they cleared by 07z.
The southwesterly winds were a little stronger than expected as well. I wonder
if there was a subtle shortwave that brought in the southwesterly winds and a
bit of warmer air overnight. Full sunshine led to a quick warmup but not as
warm as it could have been, with a high of 57F (it was going to be 56F but it hit
57F for just 1 or 2 minutes!). The sunshine led to stronger winds mixing from
aloft, with a max of 13 kt. Winds look weaker tonight so radiational cooling
should work better tonight, with clear skies except for a few high clouds late
in the night. Full sunshine except for a few morning high clouds will lead to a
rapid warmup tomorrow, with a slightly warmer high than today. Let’s see if
that logic works though! However, winds will line up parallel to the Tennessee
Valley and therefore will be stronger than today.
