Managed to cool down to 51F as there weren’t a lot of clouds
until very late in the night, and the valley location sheltered Knoxville from
the southeasterly winds that were starting to get going aloft. After some
morning clouds, bright sunshine prevailed for peak heating in early afternoon
with quickly warming temperatures and a high of 83F. South/southwesterly winds were
slow to get going initially but suddenly got 25 kt! The winds are enhanced by
them being parallel to the Tennessee valley and also by mixing of stronger
winds from aloft with higher surface temperatures than expected. Still quite uncertain how much precip falls before and after 06z tonight.
For day 3, scattered showers will occur near the beginning
of the period tonight. The Storm Prediction Center has Knoxville in a marginal risk
of severe weather tonight, though the lack of daytime heating should limit
severe weather. Still, some briefly heavy rain and stronger winds could occur
just ahead of the cold front, with possible terrain enhancement as the
southwesterly winds align with the Tennessee valley orientation, though now that seems more likely before 06z tonight. It will dry
out and winds will change to northwesterly by late morning. These winds are perpendicular
to the Tennessee valley orientation and so will not be that strong. Cool air will come
in though it will still be a bit warm with the downsloping and increasing
sunshine in the afternoon. A quick cooldown follows tomorrow night for the low
at Friday 06z with the combination of cold advection and radiational cooling,
with clear skies and lighter winds though maybe not calm enough for ideal
radiational cooling.
