After the rain
ended last night, the strong downsloping northwesterly winds scoured out the cold
air damming, and combined with afternoon sunshine, led to a quick rise to 59F,
warmer than most model guidance, before the cold advection really set in. Yikes
for the cold GFS model! Surprisingly though, maximum wind has only been 13 kt
so far. Clear skies will continue through tomorrow. Northwesterly winds will
gradually weaken tonight and might become just weak enough for better
radiational cooling toward sunrise, but the winds are marginal for this, making
for a tricky low temperature forecast. Also, temperatures have been running
much warmer than model guidance with the slightly delayed cold advection this
evening. Sunshine tomorrow will lead to a quick warmup, probably to above model
guidance as it usually does on a sunny day, especially with today’s warmth melting
all the snow and ice accumulation from earlier in the week. The downsloping
wind will weaken as surface high pressure settles in. The maximum wind will
likely occur near the beginning (Friday 06z).
