Surprisingly, it
only got down to -25F last night, not any colder than a lot of model guidance,
unlike previous nights; perhaps the wind stayed a little too strong and the northerly wind direction appears to be less favorable for rapid cooling. Some
places to the northwest, like Bismarck, ND, got down to -39F! Sunshine led to a
quick warmup to -2F or -3F for the high, with the wind surprisingly strengthening
to at least 12 kt this afternoon. Clear skies and light northerly winds will
lead to good radiational cooling again tonight, though there may be just enough
wind again to prevent ideal radiational cooling, though temperatures are still expected
to be at least as cold if not a bit colder tonight than last night with the wind being a bit more northwesterly or possibly westerly, likely more favorable for rapid cooling. Sunshine
will lead to a quick warmup tomorrow, with the high being warmer
than today as the arctic air mass slowly modifies. The wind will be weaker than today with the surface high pressure approaching.
