Day 8 of Traverse City, MI (KTVC)

After a maximum of 15 kt of wind overnight (struggling to mix stronger winds down to the surface, perhaps due to the warm air aloft, steep inversion underneath it), the wind calmed down, allowing to drop to Day 7 low of 30F was at the beginning. With some sunshine, it then warmed up to a high of 46F this afternoon, above almost all models. For day 8 (last day of WxChallenge until January 29) winds will shift slightly to south-southeasterly and strengthen, and combined with some low-level clouds, will prevent much radiational cooling and actually leading to warming after around 02z or so. Sunshine for at least the first half of the day before high clouds move in will make tomorrow even warmer than today (warmest we’ve seen at KTVC so far), and it should be warmer than models again, especially during daytime but perhaps tonight as well. Winds will shift back to southwesterly during the day tomorrow, and the sunshine should help mix down some of the stronger winds from aloft, though the warm air aloft and inversion underneath could limit the mixing a bit.
