Arctic air mass is in place
in Denver. It reached -10F this morning and the high today so far is only 1F
despite some sunshine! Shallow arctic air masses like this usually are stronger
and more persistent than modeled once established, and so I expect temperatures
to be below model guidance through at least tomorrow. There will be some clouds
this evening but clearing will occur later in the night, and combined with
light southerly winds, will promote some radiational cooling. The air mass just
aloft is warming, so I do not expect a rapid cooldown. Winds will weaken during
the day tomorrow with plenty of sunshine, but lack of downsloping or strong
winds to mix warmer air from aloft down, as well as snow cover reflecting the
sun’s energy away, will lead to another cold day (albeit not as cold as today).
