Day 3 of Chicago, IL (KORD)

KORD is fixed, phew! Dropped to 63F last night with mostly cloudy skies. Only a light shower last night so far with only 0.02” so far. Clouds broke a bit more than expected, and with weaker winds off Lake Michigan (max of 12 kt so far), it rose to 72F. It’s a bit surprising that the showers have all weakened and it is dry at KORD all day, but maybe the slightly warmer temperatures will induce a bit of instability to generate more showers and thunderstorms with a bit more wind this evening.

There may be a leftover light shower or drizzle tomorrow, but otherwise no rain tomorrow as upper-level low moves away to the east and weakens. However, lingering low-level moisture enhanced by northeasterly winds off Lake Michigan will lead to persistent low-level clouds until perhaps early afternoon, when breaks of sun will occur and cause it to warm up, perhaps with a similar high to today. How warm it gets depends on how much it clears out, with the NAM 3-km showing more persistent clouds and therefore is cooler, while HRRR and ECMWF are showing them clear out faster and therefore are warmer. Given that the clouds were able to break yesterday and today, allowing the warmer models to verify, I expect that to occur again tomorrow. The persistent though light winds off the lake and clouds will also limit the cooldown tonight, though it is possible that the low could occur near the end (Friday 06z) when the sky is clearer and winds are a bit lighter.
