A
little snow after 06z amounted to 0.05” of precipitation, a little less
than expected, and the peak wind occurred just after midnight local
time, at 14-15 kt. Winds rapidly calmed down and skies partly cleared,
leading to quick radiational cooling down to 18F late this morning with
fresh snow cover, before west-northwesterly winds unexpectedly
strengthened. Given the still near-saturated low-levels, ice fog formed
which slowed the cooling somewhat before the winds mixed it out, but
subtle cold and dry advection should enable additional slow cooling
tonight into tomorrow morning, albeit interrupted by periodic mid-level
clouds and perhaps a bit of westerly winds off the warmer Bering Sea.
Winds will turn out of the south or southeast briefly in the afternoon
with increasing clouds as a weak disturbance approaches. A couple of
snow showers are possible with it but very little precipitation is
expected. The winds turn back to northwesterly and weaken towards the
end of the day (Thursday 06z) but it might not clear out in time to lead
to lower temperatures than in the morning. The high will occur during
cloudy periods and will be difficult for models to handle.
