WxChallenge is back with Fort
Myers, FL (KFMY). This
week will not feature the typical boring Florida warm-season weather, as a
hurricane will influence the weather for the first time in WxChallenge history
that I know of. For Day 1, Hurricane Ian will be well off to the southwest, but
thunderstorms and cloudy conditions will already occur associated with the
interaction between a weakening cold front and the outer bands of Hurricane Ian.
Heavy downpours at times could be associated with brief strong winds due to convection mixing down stronger winds from aloft, with
breezy easterly winds at other times. Clouds, rain, and wind will limit diurnal
temperature range. The strongest winds from Ian will not arrive until Wednesday, after the end of day 1.
It appears as if the heaviest rain from Ian will stay just offshore, but the amount of rain will be very sensitive to Ian's exact track.
